Start of a long journey

Starting new training cycle today. Here we go: Target is a 70.3 triathlon next year. Haven’t signed yet because all registrations are still closed. Since it’s going to be my first season, I’m aiming for a flat course in September (Barrelman, Niagara, ON, Canada) but there are a couple of hilly ones in July-August (Muskoka, ON and Mount Tremblant, QC, both also in Canada), probably out of my reach just yet. It’s too early to decide… who knows what’s gonna happen next year…

Regarding my training, I’m following a Trainerroad Half Triathlon Low Volume Plan. I just set my plan with Plan Builder and the math geeks at Trainerroad did the rest, with a caveat: there is not such a thing as One-Plan-Fits-All. My plan doesn’t consider my athletic history, my fitness at the start of the plan, my old and recent injuries, my age, recovery time, nutrition, and a large etcetera… It’s in the job description of every athlete to monitor the progress and recovery. Not all athletes respond the same way to the same training stimulus and training may have to (and should) be adjusted.

Other factors to be considered:

2021 Goals: Aside of the two options of the 70.3, I’m already registered for the Toronto Marathon in May and an Olympic Triathlon in June, both deferred from 2020. If I have to bet today I think the Marathon it’s not going to happen. The Olympic Triathlon is a maybe. More adjusting to the year plan may be required.

Swimming: Pools in my area are still closed, so for now I will replace the swim workouts with strength training, something I’ve neglected for years.

Today’s workout: Base Run.

It was cold and really windy outside, so I did it on the treadmill. 35 mins with 9 bursts of 30 secs at 8mph. Not crazy fast but I have to build my speed gradually. Aside from football, I haven’t been doing too much speed work in the last few months. Be patient, we are here for the long haul.

Take care and be safe, wherever you are.
